Manipulation of
microbial populations
Failure to control pathogens in the hatchery using the conventional methods of formalin and chlorination has to the development of alternative methods of improving the bacterial populations in the rearing water. A new integrated
rotifer-tilapia-Chlorella system is now being used for the production of rotifers fed on
Chlorella produced in tilapia tanks. Initial results suggest that this green water system seems to have a good bacterial community with low
Vibrio count and resulted in highest zoeal survival rates when compared with clear water larval rearing systems.

Probiotic bacteria
Forty-one possible strains of probiotic bacteria have been isolated from the culture water in the crab larviculture system. Bacteria were selected for anti-microbial activity and for dominance in the culture medium. Selected strains are maintained in deep freezer for later screening.
